How is Puerto Plata's Nightlife?

Me and a few friends are planning a vacation and we're considering the Dominican Republic. We're all good looking American men in our 20's and we are looking for good weather/beaches, partying and women, all with a decent price tag. We will be going for about 2 weeks in either April or May.
Dom Repub sounds like it has what we are looking for but some of the pictures we've seen make the beaches and cities look rather small. We're definitely looking for a lively area with no shortage of things to do in the day and in the night. We've been to Thailand, and while we're not looking for the same experience, we'd like something comparable. Will the DR have enough to offer?
We've also been looking at the southern coast near Juan Dolio and Boca Chica. We've heard Punta Cana is nice but is only AI resorts which we are not interested in as we want to move around and explore a bit more. Is the DR the right place for us? Also, what are the average costs for hotels, food/restaurants, drinks etc. Any other advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

The DR's nightlife does not even compare to Thailand. Since you have already been to Thailand you will be very disappointed when you get to the DR. It is an under-developed country compared to even Thailand. It lacks infrastructure and is difficult to get around. Hotels in the DR are more expensive than in Thailand. There are cheap hotels in the DR but they are pretty bad and have bugs in them. I was in a $25/nt hotel room one time in Sosua and I had bugs crawling over me all night so the next time I transferred to an all-inclusive. My advice is to get an all-inclusive in Sosua for one week and then take the bus to Boca Chica and get an all-inclusive there for the next week. That way you will be able to accomplish your goals by exploring and not sacrifice your living conditions.

You've found the right place. Puerta Plata/ Sosua / Cabarete are three towns in a row and all feature a distinctly different air. On the other hand, Punta Cana is just like every other resort area.

If you like to venture away from the hotel at all, want any night life other than the hotel bar, or want to actually see the DR, Puerta Plata is a much better spot. It has culture, rainforests, nightlife, kiteboarding. . . . .. . .and on and on,

If you want to lounge at the beach at the resort-only areas, just pick the cheapest place (Cancun, Florida, Hawaii, PCana. etc) they are all the same.

depends what you are looking for ; there are tons of bars in sosua some thing for everyone there ; yes alot of chicas or hookers but so what u are there to have fun; and some very in expensive hotels apartments too you just need top know where to look ; if you want to stay all the time in 4 or 5 star places then sosua is not for you ; and its completely safe there if u exercise care ; no showing off your rolex watches or do not wear any expensive jewelery ; after all you are basically in a poor country why rub it in that you are very well off; i;ve been there over 5 times never had a problem stayed at all inclusives and apartments that are very reasonable to rent by the day week or month

I have been all over the DR at times. For partying and women, Boca Chica has the most action. At night they shut off traffic on main street and all the bars and night clubs move out into the street. And you will be surrounded by local women. The beach in Boca Chica is very nice also. But DR does not compare to Thailand. It is not a modern country in many ways. If you do a search on Boca Chica you will see there is many reasonable hotels. Just watch your wallet, everyone is after your money.
